Tyneside has been awarded for its floral depiction of northern landmarks in the Chelsea Flower Show.

The Newcastle and Gateshead entry in the show has been awarded a silver medal for its exhibit featuring the river Tyne and landmarks including the Tyne Bridge and Angel of the North.

The 50,000-plant display also promotes the Newcastle and Gateshead bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008.

The queen is said to have been impressed by the display saying that it reminded her of a recent visit to the Quayside and seeing the Angel of the North from the royal train.

There will be an opportunity to see the exhibit in the north as it is to be rebuilt at the Gateshead Flower Show between July 26-28.
