A LONE musician carried out a soundcheck yesterday ahead of an extra special concert.
Mick Donnelly was at Gisborough Priory, east Cleveland, to put the final touches to a Jubilee Spectacular, taking place on Saturday, June 1.
Mick, who plays saxaphone, clarinet and flute, is conductor of the 20-strong Musicians Unlimited, which will be recreating the 1950s with the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey.
The open-air concert has been organised by Guisborough Town Pride and is supported by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and is expected to attract a sell-out audience of 500.
Mick, bandmaster at Barnard Castle School, is thrilled for the band he formed 12 years ago, which now boasts five trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, two singers, piano, bass, drums and guitar.
"It's a great mixture," said Mick, who will be conducting two one-hour sets.
"We've got professional musicians, ex-pros and the rest are semi-pro or amateur with a range of jobs - teacher, roofer and B&Q store erector."
His wife Tina and children Leanne, Tobias and Nathan will be lending their support as well.
The concert begins with the Marske Junior Band at 6.30pm, followed by Musicians Unlimited at 7.30pm. Concert-goers can take their own rugs and picnics. Tickets are £5.50 for adults, £3 for concessions and £1 for under-16s. Call (01287) 633801 or 622422 for details.
