TWO men are facing charges after police found thousands of Ecstasy tablets with a street value of £45,000 when they stopped a car for speeding on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire.
Christopher Alexander, 22, who was described in court as a music promoter, and 21-year-old James Ellison were remanded in custody when they appeared before Harrogate magistrates yesterday.
Both men will appear at York Crown Court on Monday.
Mr Alexander, of Sea Road, Fulwell, Sunderland, and Mr Ellison, of Cardigan Terrace, Newcastle, are each accused of possession of three kilos of Ecstasy with intent to supply to others at Marton-le-Moor, near Boroughbridge, on May 10.
Mr Ellison faces further allegations of escaping from lawful custody at the scene of the police speed check and of theft of a pair of handcuffs.
Mr Alexander is also accused of assaulting Traffic Constable Andrew Macleod with intent to resist or prevent lawful apprehension, and with a similar offence involving Traffic Constable Ian Crozier.
He is also charged with assaulting both officers in the execution of their duty and with possession of nine ounces of cannabis resin and possession of the drug with intent to supply it to persons unknown.
