A FUND to raise money for research into a rare form of cancer was launched yesterday.
The Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund has been set up by the British Lung Foundation with help from Chris Knighton, whose husband, Mick, died from the condition last year.
Among those at the launch of the campaign, on HMS Calliope, Gateshead, was Michael Ward from Newcastle Falcons, Dr Tim Peel, a mesothelioma specialist and families affected by the disease.
In cases of malignant mesothelioma, cancer cells are found in the lining of the chest, or abdomen.
It largely affects people who have come into contact with asbestos in their jobs.
Deaths from mesothelioma in the north are the highest in the UK, and more than double those of many areas of the country.
To mark the fund's launch, Mr Knighton's grandchildren released 1,000 red balloons, which are the British Lung Foundation's logo.
HMS Calliope was chosen as the location because Mr Knighton served in the Royal Navy and his colleagues were keen to support the project.
Mrs Knighton, of Wallsend, Tyneside, hopes to raise £100,000, and is keen to hear from anyone who can help. She can be contacted on 0191-263 7386.
