Councillor changes party

VETERAN Scarborough councillor Harry Rowe has quit the Conservatives and become a member of the independent group. The former Mayor, who has represented the Staithes, Runswick Bay and Hinderwell area for more than 30 years, said he was dissatisfied with the way the party was being run and the lack of consultation with councillors on policy issues.

Cat show: The Millennium Cat Club is holding a show at the Hambleton Community Centre, Northallerton, on Sunday, June 16, from 10am to 5pm. It will include pedigree breeds and domestic pets. Admission is £2 adults, £1 for children.

WHEELS GONE: Thieves stole alloy wheels worth £400 from a car in Willow Court, Pickering, and are thought to have taken a set, of the same value, from a car at the Forest and Vale Hotel.

TRAIN DAMAGE: Vandals caused £200 of damage to a stored train carriage at the North York Moors Railway at Newbiggin, Pickering, by firing shots at it.

BURST PIPE: About 1,500 customers were left without water when a main burst in Woodthorpe, York.

GIVE BLOOD: A blood donor session is to be held at the parish church on Front Street, Acomb, York, on June 25, between 2pm and 4pm and then 5pm to 7.30pm.

NATURAL CAUSES: A pensioner who collapsed while changing a wheel on his car in University Road, York, died of natural causes, a post-mortem examination has revealed. The man has not yet been named.

Dance date: South Kilvington Parish Council are holding a summer dance and barbecue on the school playing fields on Sunday, June 2 at 7.30pm. The fun starts at 2pm with an "open to all" cricket match with all players welcome. Tickets are £7 from the school and Electroworld in Thirsk. Proceeds go to the school.
