A CRACKDOWN on illegal fly-tipping by Sedgefield Borough Council could see large fines being imposed on the perpetrators.

Staff from the council are monitoring selected sites which have been identified as dumping spots and are collecting evidence against persistent offenders.

Anyone caught could face legal action leading to punishments ranging from a £50 fixed penalty to a maximum £2,500 fine imposed by a court.

The council operates a free monthly collection service for up to six household items and white goods including cookers, washing machines and refrigerators.

Rubbish can also be taken to civic amenities sites at Tudhoe Industrial Estate, Newton Aycliffe Industrial Estate and Coxhoe.

Gary Watson, the borough's street cleansing officer, said: "We are working very closely with other local authorities and Durham County Council in a bid to stamp out fly-tipping.

"Three of our hot spots are in the Shildon area, at Brusselton, Green Lane and Jubilee Bridge.

"We have been holding talks with Durham County Council and may consider putting up gates in these areas to prevent access.

"It has become an anti-social problem and something we must stamp out.

"If we have to prosecute, we will."
