A VETERINARY practice is hoping to secure hospital status to allow for a major expansion.
Edgemoor Vets, in Helmsley, wants to build a two-storey extension in a move which bosses claim would create extra jobs.
Principal vet George Skinner said: "What we are looking to do is to expand and upgrade the facilities. Our aim will be to acquire hospital status and to do that there are various requirements the British Veterinary Hospital Association lay down.
"It will undoubtedly provide much better facilities for clients, with more kennel space, a larger waiting room and accommodation for scanners, x-ray machines and so on."
An operating theatre will be equipped to deal with surgery on dogs, cats and small animals such as hamsters and guinea pigs.
Mr Skinner said they were also hoping to provide staff accommodation at the Station Road site.
He said: "We would like to provide nurses accommodation in the building to provide nursing cover 24 hours a day."
The fate of the proposals will rest with planners at Ryedale District Council.
