THE Police Complaints Authority (PCA) has been informed after an east Durham man was seriously injured in a car crash.
The 28-year-old, from Seaham, who is not being identified, was travelling on the A283 road, near Worthing, Sussex, with a 23-year-old man from Reading, Berkshire, on Wednesday night, when a police car started following them.
When the police caught up, they found the men's red Ford Fiesta car badly damaged in the middle of the road.
The man from Seaham was found at the side of the road, having sustained head and chest injuries. His companion, who was in the car, had minor injuries. Both were detained in hospital.
Sussex Police is investigating the incident and the PCA is to supervise the inquiry.
A Sussex Police spokesman said officers' attention was drawn to the Fiesta because of the way it was being driven.
"A full investigation is being carried out and, as a matter of routine, the incident has been referred to the Police Complaints Authority," he said.
