A PRIMARY school football team is celebrating cup winning success for the first time in 29 years.

Cleves Cross Primary School, in Ferryhill, has been entering the Spennymoor and Ferryhill Primary Schools Football Association Five-a-Side Football Festival since it was established.

But headteacher John Hepplewhite said his team have never won in the 29 years he has been in charge.

This week, however, the boys finally brought the silverware home after beating 16 teams.

Mr Hepplewhite said: "I am delighted that we have won it eventually.

"We have won minor things, but this is the main competition.

"It doesn't matter what quality team we have put out in the past, we just never managed it, and now we have.''

The winning team are Captain Jason White, Dean Egleton, Ricky Morland, Dean Wilkinson, all 11, Michael Pattison, Joe Ramage, Kieron Thompson, all ten, and Timothy Fenny, nine.
