MIDDLESBROUGH goalkeeper Marlon Beresford could rejoin First Division Burnley this summer on a free transfer.

Beresford, 32, is being released by Boro four years after he arrived from Turf Moor in a £400,000 deal.

Burnley boss Stan Ternent confirmed: "We would love to be able to offer Marlon a position here.

"But we are not in a position to offer anything at the moment. We are still putting together next season's budget and until we have done that we won't be making any moves."

Beresford spent two months on loan with the Clarets last season before being recalled by Boro because of a keeper crisis.

But his opportunities with Boro have been severely limited, and his last appearance - only his 13th for the first team - came as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in December when he took over from the injured Mark Crossley after just 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, Boro midfielder Mark Summerbell is waiting to learn whether he has a long-term future with Portsmouth following his loan spell at Fratton Park.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp said: ''Mark did a useful job while he was here.

''I got him and Scott Wilson from Rangers so I could have a look at them with next season in mind.

''We'll see what develops over the next few weeks in both cases. We made Scott an offer which he felt was not good enough and I know he is considering other offers.

''Mark is one we shall keep in mind. He has plenty of Premiership experience and that is important.''
