THE Queen's golden jubilee is being marked with a cathedral concert by the British Red Cross next month.

It will feature Durham Sinfonia, conducted by Andre de Ridder, playing works by Handel, Tchaikovsky and Walton.

The Durham Singers, directed by Alan Oyston, will perform a programme with works by Thomas Weekes and Gerald Finzi.

Bill Fox, senior fundraiser for the Red Cross' County Durham and Teesside branch, said the society was delighted to be involved in the event.

"The special programme of music performed by this accomplished orchestra and soloists, combined with the splendour of Durham Cathedral, will represent a superb tribute to her majesty's 50-year reign," he said.

Money raised at the concert, on Saturday, June 15, at 7.30pm, will help to support and expand the services provided by the Red Cross in the community, caring particularly for those in crisis.

Tickets, costing £12.50 and £10 for concessions, are available from Durham Tourist Information Centre, at the Gala Theatre in Millennium Place, on 0191-384 7641, or from the Red Cross, at Flass House, Waddington Street, Durham, on 0191-386 4367.

There is no charge for children accompanied by an adult.
