GAS industry company Transco has agreed to delay work in Scarborough after warnings it would cause congestion in the holiday season.
The borough council asked Transco to rethink its plan because main roads into the resort would have become jammed with queuing traffic. The £365,000 scheme involves replacing old iron gas mains with plastic pipes in Seamer Road, Scalby Road, Newborough, Cayton *ow Road and Stepney Drive.
War veterans: The York branch of the British Korean Veterans' Association is dedicating its new standard at All Saints' Church, Pavement, York, tomorrow. Veterans will gather in St Helen's Square at 9.45am to parade to the church for the service, at 10.30am.
PEDAL POWER: Councillors are urging children and students in Norton-on-Derwent to "get on their bike". The town council has backed a new initiative y Sustrans, the national cycle network organisation, to develop safe routes to cycle to school.
CHILDREN'S SHOW: A musical puppetry show is coming to Hambleton Community Centre, Northallerton, next Saturday. Wonky Donkey will be staged by Blunderbus Theatre Company, which is also hosting a children's workshop after the show. The play begins at 11am and the workshop at 12.15pm. TAX DEMANDS: Scarborough Borough Council has sent out 733 summonses to try to recover nearly £210,000 in unpaid council tax and business rates. The authority's corporate services has issued the summonses following the sending out of 1,460 final notices on May 1.
NEW MAYOR: The new Lord Mayor of York is David Horton, 60, a Labour councillor in the city for the past 16 years. His Lady Mayoress is his daughter, Kathleen Gibson, 28. The new Sheriff of York is Councillor Martin Brumby, whose wife, Annette, is the new Sheriff's Lady.
GREASED LIGHTNING: Staff at Pizza Hut, in Monk's Cross, York, dressed as characters from the musical Grease for a day to raise funds for Starlight, a charity which grants wishes to children with terminal illnesses.
HOSPICE GIFT: More than £500 has been presented to St Catherine's Hospice, Scarborough, by Helmsley Freemasons, following an open evening in the town hall.
