A TASK force set up to support 147 workers facing redundancy at a North-East cement works has revealed details of a plan to regenerate the area.
The group was formed following the announcement in January that Lafarge (UK) is to close its Blue Circle plant at Eastgate, Upper Weardale, County Durham.
The closure move has sent shockwaves around the dale.
The task force has held meetings to consider initiatives to support the communities in Upper Weardale and provide a basis for future development of the valley.
The group has a core membership drawn from regional development agency One NorthEast, Durham County Council, Wear Valley District Council and Lafarge.
The group has received a report from GHK Consultants, outlining a range of ideas to be taken forward, some of which are expected to be announced soon.
Lafarge has promised that it will continue to work with its staff on redeployment, early retirement and local job placement.
Wear Valley District Council will be developing a consultation programme to take consultants' initial suggestions to community groups throughout the dale.
County Durham Development Company and Wear Valley Development Agency will provide profiles of key businesses in the dale, which will receive support to expand their companies.
