A NIGHTCLUB is planning a series of summer events to raise money for a charity founded after the death of a Redcar schoolgirl.

Katie Neal was six years old when she died from a form of brain cancer, three years ago.

Since then, the Katie Trust has been set up in her memory by her parents Martin and Debbie and brother Tom, to raise funds for a specialist researcher in Newcastle to look at the form of cancer Katie had.

Now Sharky's bar and club in Redcar is hoping to raise cash for the charity through a variety of entertaining events.

It began by holding a raffle and collection earlier this month and raised more than £200, and plans another raffle at the beginning of next month, while regulars are to take part in an abseil down the Tyne Bridge organised by the charity, on July 14. The main event will be on August 28 when there is another raffle with a top prize of a week's holiday for two in Majorca, donated by Pandora Sol Holidays, Guisborough.

Other prizes have been offered by shops and businesses in the Redcar area, including Middlesbrough Football Club, which donated Mark Crossley's goalkeeper's shirt.

On August 28, manager Darren Nightingale will have his head shaved to further boost the fund - saying farewell to a ponytail he has had for many years.
