SUNDERLAND University has attracted one of the region's leading sports development managers to help further improve the institution's sporting facilities and student teams.

Former basketball star Ivan Whitfield has had a successful career as both a sportsman and sports manager in the region for more than 20 years.

The university sees it as a real coup to bring the 38-year-old former regional development manager for Sport England to the institution.

Ivan, who spent ten years playing National League Basketball with three of the region's teams, is responsible for co-ordinating and developing sport at the university. Ivan will help it to develop all aspects of sport and physical recreation in a new strategy.

He will also assist clubs and organisations, while concentrating on a number of priority sports, including football, tennis, swimming, basketball and water sports.

As well as its own facilities the university will take advantage of the facilities in Sunderland, including the Raich Carter Centre, Sea-burn Centre, Puma Centre, Crow-tree and the Silksworth Sports Complex, thanks to a good partnership with the City of Sunderland.
