PLANS to improve sporting opportunities in Redcar have been approved.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's executive approved the plans to use the West Redcar Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) area as the focus for its part of a Tees Valley Sport Action Zone.
So far 12 areas, including the Tees Valley, have been designated as sports action zones, by Sport England. The intention is to develop sporting opportunities and more participation in sporting activities in some of the most deprived areas of the country.
Development of a Sport Action Zone means that the role of sport can be used significantly in wider regeneration activities. About £100,000 a year is to be made available to help with this in each zone.
The council felt that by using the west Redcar area, which already receives funding from the SRB budget, it would help to maximise the money available to the area and the possibilities would be wider.
At a meeting this week, the leader of the council, Councillor David Walsh, said it would mean that about £10,000 to £12,000 would be available to west Redcar.
