FIVE candidates will be contesting the fight for a vacant seat on a Teesside council.
The by-election for the St Germain's ward in Marske, for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, could be one of the most interesting contests in years because of the number of candidates fighting for a seat that has been controlled by both the Liberal Democrats and Labour.
The two parties have both put up candidates - current chairman of Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council Sue McLeod for Labour, and parish councillor and veteran community campaigner Bill Goodwill for the Lib Dems.
But the most interesting contestant is well-known Marske campaigner Mike Findlay, who has chosen to stand for the East Cleveland Independent party.
The Conservative party has also put up a candidate - Neil Bilham - and the Green Party has chosen east Cleveland environmental campaigner Peter Goodwin to compete.
The successful candidate will replace former councillor Ken Seymour, who resigned through ill health.
Every household in the St Germain's ward is receiving a leaflet about postal votes. Applications for a postal vote are available on (01642) 444410 and must be returned by June 19.
