PROVIDED the going remains on the slow side at Ayr this afternoon Jeffrey Anotherred (3.55) is an absolute must to have on your side in the seven-furlong Macdonalds Handicap.
The Michael Dods-trained eight-year-old has failed to win over the past couple of seasons, however there were valid excuses for his disappointing 2001 campaign when the stable was seemingly under a permanent cloud.
Dods might have lost the battle last year, but not the war and the Denton-near-Darlington-based handler has come out all guns blazing this term, firing in winners all over the north.
Now that conditions are almost perfect for Jeffrey Anotherred at Ayr, where he won twice in 1999, more success at the Scottish track is very much on the cards.
Best bet at Goodwood may well turn out to be North Yorkshire raider Zeitzig in the six-furlong dash at 3.10.
Trainer David Barron is no stranger to big-race success at the Sussex track, having claimed the 1994 Stewards Cup with For The Present.
Admittedly Zietzig is nowhere near in that league, however the overall level of his sprint form gives him a major chance, especially with such a favourable high draw.
In the closing Aviation Industries Handicap, Raised The Bar (5.20) can make it two wins on the afternoon for northern yards.
Raised The Bar was anchored by top-weight on her reappearance outing at Hamilton, where the combination of the uphill finish and soft ground caught her out in the final 100 yards.
She'll strip far fitter for the outing and in addition will be much better suited by the less testing nature of Goodwood's nine-furlong track.
Things simply didn't click for Bingley-based Sue Smith over the winter, but come the spring and her string has struck form with a vengeance.
On recent evidence Sue's Grate Deel (8.40) doesn't seem to be in with a prayer for Wetherby's Rocom Handicap Chase. Nonetheless he's a previous track and trip scorer and if he can bounce back in similar fashion to some of his other stable-mates, then victory is not out of the question for the gallant eleven-year-old gelding.
At Huntingdon, Good Thyne Johnny (6.25) has the perfect opportunity to follow-up his recent pillar-to-post Uttoxeter success.
He could be hard to pass this evening if the same forcing tactics are applied.
