Bedale May Scramble
This popular format of men's ladies and mixed teams proved a pleasant change from the normal club competitions and mixed teams were involved in the top three placings with excellent scoring.
Scores: 56.6 Julian Beer, Ian and Gill Waddelow, David Beardsworth (5.4hcp); 58.2 Tony Phillips, John Shaw, Shirley Somatundrum, Joan Sanderson (5.8hcp); 58.7 Ian and Pautine Morris, Steven Whitwham, Jonatban Morris (6.3hcp).
Seniors
A stableford qualifying competition for the elderly golfers with the course still proving a good test of golf as witnessed by the leading scores which were 39 points John Archer (11). 37 points Noel Winstanley (13) and Kevin McCourt (19) card countback required, 36 points Tony Howard (18).
Sue Mayman, the club's ladies Veteran Golfer, has continued her appearances in Ladies veteran competitions.
Having recently competed at Fulford she has extended her area to include the Ladies Northern Veterans Competition played at Durham City Golf Club. She finished in the top 16 in the stroke play round but eventually was beaten in the Matchplay round, however not before achieving a hole in one on the second hole. Sue has been selected to play in the first match of the Yorkshire Veteran Ladies against Durham at Bishop Auckland. All members wish her luck in this important match.
Juniors
Harrogate Union Junior Inter League
Bedale's first two matches have now been completed. A home fixture against Ilkley resulted in a 3 and 1 win, but an away visit to Harrogate left Bedale without a single point.
Dales Alliance
The last round of the delayed spring season has now been completed with the final match being played at Blackwell Grange.
Home course advantage did not apply and Blackwell could only manage fourth place with Crook being winners.
Scores: Crook 201; Thirsk and Northallerton 196; Catterick Garrison 194; Blackwell Grange 193; Bedale 187; Richmond 180.
Prize winners: 43 points S Gaskell/D Haley (Thirsk and Northallerton); 42 K Ward/T Morris (Bedale). Also K Simpson/P Goodall (Catterick Garrison); 41 L Shaw/G Shaw (Crook).
Final results of Spring season: 1135 Catterick Garrison; 1133 Thirsk and Northallerton 1109 Crook; 1095 Blackwell Grange; 1092 Richmond; 1090 Bedale.
While Thirsk and Northallerton's ambitions were not quite fulfilled by the margin of three points, they achieved a very creditable runners-up position to the early season champions Catterick Garrison. All members will look forward to the competition being resumed in September.
Third Division Championship
In recent years Bedale have been very successful in this competition, but a round at Oakdale Golf club found the Bedale team well out of the running. Pannal A team set the standard with an excellent score of 384. Bedale's A team of R Holmes, R Payne 114, J Turnbull 104, and P Walker 99, finished with a total of 422 and Bedale's B of M.Cueurullo 102, W Burton 112, G Bainbridge 112, S SwalesIll finished with a score of 437 which left both teams well down the field.
Pro-Am Qualifier
As its name implies this competition is played to decide who will represent the club in the Pro-Am Day to be held on Tuesday, September 10.
Players and scores: Division One: 38 points Simon Griffiths (4). Division Two: 43 Mike Ingram (12). Division Three: Michael Greenwood (22).
Bishop Auckland
Dowling Cup (par/bogey): Played in a field of 145 players in blustery conditions the winners were as follows: 1 M Tyrie 4up; 2 A Dell 3up; 3 K Clarkson 3up.
Famous Grouse Trophy - (foursomes/strokeplay): 1 S Skaife/S Pentith gross 79, nett 73.5; 2 P Lee/N Laws 88, 75; 3 B Nixon/R McCormack 92, 77.
The Mail on Sunday Four Man Team Event: In the fourth round against Chester-le-Street, D Whales, N Dodd, W Hewitt and J Birbeck had a narrow victory with the latter winning after the fourth extra hole.
Harrogate Union Inter-Club League
The first match of the season. A home tie against Masham proved a somewhat challenging occasion for Bedale's single player. It was only the performance of the pairs that allowed Bedale to draw this match.
Singles: K Ward won 3 and 1 over R Brown; J Webster lost 3 and 2 to A Binks. S Griffiths lost by one hole to P O'Byrne. A Gatenby halved with D Ward. Pairs captain and professional lost 3 and 2 to A Meakin/P Baker; N Brown/B Barclay won 5 and 4 over S Carr/N Hatch. S Whitwham/T Waters won 4 and 2 over A Sturdy/D Smith. M Asquith/J Forrester won 2 and 1 over S Abbot/R Stebbings.
Wheldon Cup
A restricted competition for the senior golfers was played on Sunday with the following results: 69 Colin Soady (18); 71 Chris Natrass (8); 72 Peter Taylor (19).
Red Cross Cup No 4
A poor night for this week's round with the following leading results: 40 points Paul Beswick (25); 39 Mike Greenwood (22), also Steven Whitham (6) card countback required; 32 Robert Holmes (22).
Ladies - Cancer Trophy
Good scores for this competition with Gillian Petrie winning the trophy.
Leading scores: 41 points Gillian Petrie (6); 39 Ann Naylor (31); Janet Hulse (39).
Sue Waring Memorial Trophy
Presented by the Waring family in memory of Sue. This Stableford competition was won by Val Abbey.
Leading scores: 38 points Val Abbey (15); 37 Shirley Bibby (20); 36 Julia Doughty (4).
Northern Counties Ladies Veteran Association
THE championship held at Durham City golf club from May 21-23. Northern Counties captain was Mrs Jean Houston and Durham County Vets ladies captain Marjorie Hall.
Semi-finalists were: J Smith (Yorks), Hilary Smyth (Yorks), J Rogers (Lancs), Barbara Cheetham (Durham).
Final between Hilary Smyth (Yorks) and J Rogers (Lancs) was won by Hilary Smyth won four and three
