BOTH residents and visitors are welcome to join a walk around the boundaries of a historic Dales market town - re-enacting a tradition revived for the Queen's Golden Jubilee weekend.
Half a day has been set aside to cover the five-mile route, starting at Richmond Town Hall at 9am this Sunday.
However, the event is different in that it will be led by civic dignitaries as well as the town pinder - originally responsible for rounding up stray livestock - a bannerman carrying the town's coat of arms, mace-bearers and halberdiers, originally appointed to protect the mayor.
Walkers may also encounter the Richmond town crier and the waterman, visit the John Wesley preaching station and witness the custom of carrying the mayor into the River Swale.
The procession ends at The Batts, near Richmond Castle, where a community picnic is planned from 1pm.
The event has been organised with the help of the Richmond Duck Club, the Infantry Training Centre at Catterick Garrison, and is by kind permission of local farmers and Richmond Golf Club.
Those wishing to walk the easier first section and avoid the rougher middle section can be ferried to later points on the walk.
To take advantage of the service, people should contact Peter Clarke at the Town Hall on (01748) 850808.
