Wednesday's Woodlands Open will be remembered for many years after Triple World Champion Alan Scotthorne remarkably took the honours with roach, writes JEFF HERBERT.

The Shimano Mustad ace on Partridge Lake's peg 26 netted a couple of carp 1lb apiece after a slow start indicated the main population were away spawning.

A quick tactical switch to drip feeding casters at three metres soon had the 'redfins' rising for the offerings and a delighted Alan kept them coming catching samples in the 4 - 12ozs bracket on the whip to hand for an historic 35.3.0.

Runner-up and ex-Barnsley teammate John Allerton led the carp weights returning 34.4.0 off Partridge 16 on pellet at six metres.

A near capacity turnout saw normal service resumed during Saturday's Open at Woodland Lakes when carp nets decided the top six all coming off Partridge Lake.

Andy Geldart of Diawa Goldthorpe was into the forefront with an up in the water carp caught net of 41.11.0 off Partridge 12.

Working the pole at 13 metres Andy located specimens to 4.0.0 on pellet and luncheon meat varying his rig between 18" & 24" deep.

There was plenty of carp in this area as Map Elton's Mark Calvert adopted identical tactics off Peg 15 to return 37.15.0 followed at adjoining peg 14 by teamate Gordon Poole who opted to fish paste on the deck for 36.4.0.

Best of the roach weights went to on site tackle dealer and organiser Alan Gregory who put a 'Scotthorne rig' into action totalling 117 roach in the last four hours for 25-0-0.

Middlesbrough Angling Club's Hutton Rudby Ponds three hour match record crashed in sensational style when the top two in the frame both beat the old 18.11.0 figure during Tuesday evening's third match of the series.

Winner of round two Graham Metcalf of Anglers Choice raised the record to 22.14.0.

Fishing off peg 25 a small groundbait feeder and double maggot brought carp and tench - his best a 5lb carp.

Second Mick Walker of Middlesbrough tamed a hard fighting carp of 9.14.0 on the pole at 14.5 metres tight to the reeds off peg 26; using double corn on the hook. Mick lost two bigger samples but added a few more tench and carp for 20.7.0 at the whistle.

Darlington's Eddie Lizun emerged a clear winner during the Darlington Brown Trout AA Charity Match split between Snipe and Lane Fox Ponds.

With little wind off the shallows at Lane Fox the waggler proved spot on.

Swapping caster and maggot nine bream to 2.8.0 and a single tench took the scales to 16.8.0.

Barry Stephenson also Darlington filled runner up spot off Snipe Pond bringing in three carp to floatfished bread for 10.12.0.

Others: D Waterson (Darlington) 9.4.0, B Trees (Darlington) 8.5.0.

At the Oaks on Sunday Map Elton's John McGarrell finished ahead of the 61 competitors returning all carp for 50.9.0 off Maple Lake.

John was into fish up to 4lbs on cat meat and kept bites coming throughout -alternating between the pole at 12 metres across to the island off peg 56 and down the channel at seven metres.

Next Ian Bowman of Maver Barnsley Blacks had to go right across on peg 50 but failed to catch any bonus fish relying on small carp to the 1lb mark on pellet for 43.2.0 from Dean Smith (Map Elton) 41.8.0.

Oaks Sessay Thursday, Maple Lake: 1 D Smith (Map Elton) 39.4.0 - peg 13 small carp to cat meat and pellet; 2 R Ogilvy (Team Oaks) 38.0.0; 3 R Holmes (Map Elton) 37.12.0.

Thunder storms and lightning badly effected Round Ten of the Abu Spring Series at Carpvale Fishery when anglers and fish were put off by the horrendous conditions.

Armley's Mark Wade proved the only one to find fish in real numbers putting 66.4.0 together for a storming victory.

Pulling out peg 11 Mark kept his nerve to hold 14 metres of pole and found cat meat and corn on the island ledge most productive taking a dozen carp.

Paul Clarke of Hirst Tackle on peg 19 worked the pole at ten metres into open water netting eight carp to cat meat and worm for 23.12.0.

Carpvale Open (Wednesday) - Cyprio Lake: 1 D Wright (Armley) 55.0.0 - 6 carp & 5 bream falling to chopped worm at 10 metres off peg 15; 2 D Madison (York) 39.4.0; 3 W Smith (Hull) 35.8.0.
