PLANS to build 16 homes on the site of a vacant commercial garage and adjoining land will spoil views, be an over-development, and damage wildlife, opponents have claimed.
The scheme planned for Bagdale Garage, Bagdale, Whitby, would see a complex of cottage-style properties built on the site.
But Whitby Town Council is against the scheme because of the loss of trees and wildlife and because too many homes are to be built.
Refusal is also recommended by the North Yorkshire Highways Department, which says there is inadequate car parking and restricted width on the access road, while Whitby Civic Society says the homes would exacerbate an already "dire" traffic situation in Bagdale.
Neighbours say the homes will be overlooked and trees and wildlife habitats lost.
Other residents support the scheme, saying there is a need for more housing in Whitby and the garage has been an eyesore for years.
Scarborough Borough Council is now talking to the developer about possibly reducing the number of homes.
