A CHILDCARE centre in Darlington has been praised by Government inspectors for the basic academic skills and emotional development it provides.
The purpose built centre at Darlington College of Technology's Cleveland Avenue site was opened in September last year.
Inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) found the children were making good progress in their emotional development, as well as in their language, literacy and maths skills, along with their knowledge of the world around them.
The high standard of the building, amenities and equipment was also praised.
Staff were praised for their hard work and enthusiasm at the centre, which primarily serves staff and students but is also open to the general public.
The inspectors' report stated: "Staff have a sound understanding of the Early Learning Goals and make effective use of spontaneous opportunities to promote learning."
However, the report also stated the centre needed to make improvements in some aspects of communication, as well as language, literacy and maths, despite these areas being 'generally good.'
Improvements should also be made in 'the clarity of the purpose of activities in plans,' as well as the use of assessment information to plan the next steps in children's learning, particularly in relation to those youngsters who are more able.
Joanna Conway, childcare service manager for the college, said: "The childcare team are delighted with the report. They have worked hard over a short period to develop a high standard of childcare and education.
"It is wonderful to have their efforts recognised."
