VILLAGERS will be involved in sword fights, falconry displays and ferret racing today.
Mickleton Carnival has been a traditional event in the Teesdale village's diary since 1910. It is held on the first weekend of June every year and this time it coincides with the jubilee.
Chairman of the carnival committee Stanley Walinets said this year was special because of the jubilee and would be the village's contribution to the celebrations.
He said: "We were given £5,000 from the Lottery and this has enabled us to bring in the various attractions.
"It is a very enjoyable community thing. People come from all over and from quite a distance away because it has got quite a good reputation.''
Residents will gather at the west end of the village at 1pm for a fancy dress parade and the judging takes place in the village hall at 1.30pm. Teesdale Pipe and Drums will provided entertainment throug-hout the afternoon. There will also be a bird of prey display, ferret racing and sword fighting and bouncy castle.
Later in the day there will be a tug of war between the village pubs and a children's disco at 6.30pm followed by a live band and dancing for the adults.
