DURHAM Cathedral will hold a special evensong tomorrow to mark the jubilee.
It will be led by the Dean of Durham, the Very Reverend John Arnold, following a procession of dignitaries including Lord Lieutenant Sir Paul Nicholson.
The service, which starts at 3.30pm, will feature words and music familiar to people who remember - or have since seen recordings of - the Coronation in 1953. It will include works by Henry Purcell, Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry and William Walton. Handel's Zadok the Priest and Charles Villiers Stanford's Coronation Setting of Gloria in Excelsis will also be performed.
The readings will be taken from 1st Kings, Chapter 3 and 1st Thessalonians, Chapter 5, the words of St Paul quoted by the Queen in her Christmas 2000 broadcast.
The Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Michael Turnbull, will give the sermon and among the readers of special prayers will be Canon Eric Stephenson, chaplain to the Queen, and a member of the congregation who was born in 1952, the year the Queen acceded to the throne.
Sir Paul Nicholson said: "With Her Majesty's recent visit to County Durham still fresh in people's minds, the cathedral service is a wonderful opportunity for them to express their loyalty and affection for their monarch.
