COMMUNITY groups on Teesside are to benefit from a £600,000 Government cash boost.
As part of the £1.7m Community Fund awards announced yesterday, five groups received between £173,000 and £68,000.
Among the groups to benefit are the Hindu Cultural Society, in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, which receives £68,500 to pay for a day centre manager.
The society provides a meeting place for those interested in Hinduism and facilities for cultural and religious events.
Another big winner is the Teesside Homeless Action group which gets nearly £173,000 to dispense vital advice and legal information to homeless people from its Redcar base.
Another grateful recipient is the Advocacy and Information Foundation which gives help and advice for disabled people on Teesside. After receiving nearly £170,000, the group's representative, Gordon McInnes, said that one of his clients had said the foundation had been a major help.
"I'm delighted the Community Fund has been involved otherwise this person probably would not have had the confidence to speak up," he said.
Other beneficiaries are Hartlepool's Manor Residents' Association, which receives £51,000, and Hartlepool Special Needs Support Group, which gets £110,000.
