The 1966 World Cup will always be remembered for England's Wembley victory over Germany.
But that year's competition was also the setting for one of football's classic fairy tale victories.
Unfancied North Korea stunned the world when they humbled the might of Italy with a 1-0 win at Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park.
The Koreans, led by goalscorer Pak Doo Ik, returned to a hero's welcome - their Italian opponents were pelted with rotten fruit when they arrived at Rome airport.
Now an attempt is being made to reunite the surviving members of the team and return them to the scene of their greatest triumph.
A documentary is to be made about the historic match by television producer Dan Gordon who went to North Korea and was astounded by the players' fond memories of Teesside.
"Middlesbrough embraced the North Koreans and really got behind them and it is something they have never forgotten," he said.
"They say they are always pleased to meet British people because they love the people of Middlesbrough."
The idea of bringing the players across to the UK has the support of Stockton North MP Frank Cook as well as Middlesbrough FC. Dave Allen, from the club, said: "Unfortunately, Ayresome Park has gone, but we would welcome them to the Riverside, show them round and give them some hospitality."
Organisers are looking to fund the trip and anyone interested in making a donation should call Dan Gordon on 07775 693069.
The documentary is due to be shown on BBC2 later this year.
