Firefighters were called to two separate east Durham incidents of animals trapped, between Friday night and Saturday morning. They released a horse from a gate at Market Garden Farm, Paradise Crescent, Easington Colliery, and a dog from a gate at Wilkinson Road, Horden.
DRAGON POWER: Four members of the Three River Serpents dragon boat racing crew, based in Durham, have been named in the Great Britain women's crew for the European Championships, in Poland, in July. Tracy Dodds, Susie Turner, Adela Carter and Kendal Mayes will train with the national squad, at Kingston upon Thames.
MODEL SHOW: More than 1,000 models will be on show at the Northern Model Show, on Saturday and Sunday, at the Temple Park Centre, South Shields, between 10am and 5pm. Admission costs £2 for adults (£1 concessions). On the Sunday, children accompanied by paying adults will be admitted free of charge.
FUN DAY: A charity fun day will be held at Farringdon Comprehensive School, Allendale Road, Farringdon, Sunderland, on Saturday, June 29, between 11.30am and 4pm. Attractions include the Metro Radio Roadshow, craft stalls, an Army display and falconry show. Proceeds will go to charities including Downs Syndrome North-East and the NSPCC.
KENNELS PLAN: Chester-le-Street District Council is being asked to grant planning permission for 20 kennels and 20 cattery units to be built at Urpeth Forge, High Urpeth. The plan also entails building an extension to the existing farmhouse.
THREE FIRES: Three reports of fires were received in the Consett area overnight on Friday. They involved a car opposite the Park Royal Hotel, in Blackhill, a garden gate at Park Road, Blackhill and a post box at Betham Street, Blackhill. All were dealt with by Consett firefighters.
CAR STOLEN: Police are appealing for information about the theft of a red Rover 216, registration S290 BKS, which was stolen on the A1 just north of Morpeth, at 3pm on Saturday. Witnesses should call (01661) 872 555.
TRAILERS BLAZE: Firefighters were called to Commercial Vehicles Export, in Pottery Road, Southwick, Sunderland, just after 9pm on Saturday to trailers on fire. Nine trailers were destroyed.
MINI MARKET: A mini-market will be held at St Aidan Church, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, on Saturday, June 8, between 10am and 1pm. Admission is free. Proceeds will go to church funds.
Junior CRAFTs: A craft event for four to 12-year-olds will be led by Sharon Wilson at Durham Clayport Library, Millennium Place, Claypath, on Thursday, between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
ROCK NIGHT: Black Dog will be playing the music of 1970s' rock band Led Zeppelin at the O'Neill's Irish pub in Claypath, Durham, on Thursday, June 13, starting at 8.30pm. Admission is free.
