SHELTERED workshops for adults with autism have been opened in Sunderland.
The workshops in the Hendon area of the city aim to create normal working environments where students can manufacture products such as garden planters.
The facilities for Tyne and Wear Autistic Society Adult Services were opened by the society's chairman of governors Val Palmer, whose son Alan uses the workshops.
Senior tutor Tom Devitt, thanked supporters from City of Sunderland College, the City of Sunderland Council and Councillor Martin Dent, who helped to secure £1,000 Community Chest funding.
Paint and wood are supplied free by firms such as Nordstrom and B&Q.
