PRIZES worth a total of £700 were on offer in the fancy dress competition at Brompton Carnival yesterday, prompting dozens to don wacky costume for a day of family fun.
The annual event, which gave a deferential nod to the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, opened with a car boot sale in the morning and included a carnival procession around the village streets, a truck and tractor pull, children's sports and live music on High Green.
"The weather kept a few people away, but it was still a good day with a good atmosphere," said treasurer Geoff Ellenor.
"It wasn't so much a jubilee event as the carnival happens every year, and we didn't want to detract from other events planned to mark the royal anniversary."
Today, however, a programme arranged to honour the Queen's 50-year reign includes a sports day for both adults and children at High End Green from 2pm, with more family entertainment to follow later in the afternoon
