THE legendary Fortune's Kippers, whose smokehouse is perched on the clifftop at Whitby, has been included in the latest edition of the prestigious Les Routiers food guide.
The company has been smoking kippers at its Henrietta Street premises, below Whitby Abbey and the ancient parish church of St Mary's, for 130 years.
It has received national acclaim through television cooks Rick Stein, Gary Rhodes and the Two Fat Ladies, and even Princess Anne praised brothers Derek and Barry Brown, who run the business, saying how much she had enjoyed their kippers.
The brothers, who are the fifth generation of their family to run Fortunes, stick to tried-and-tested smoking methods which date back to when the business started.
Barry Brown said: "It's a great honour to be included in the guide and it is good to know that our kippers are so highly thought of.
