Appeal for help after accident
POLICE on Teesside are appealing for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident in which a 40-year-old man suffered head injuries and had both legs broken. The victim, who has not been named, is being treated in Hartlepool General Hospital.
The incident happened in the town's Burbank Street, at about 11.30pm on Monday. The car which hit the man was later found burnt out. Anyone who can help is asked to call Cleveland Police on (01642) 326326.
HOUSE BLAZE: The living room of an unoccupied house in Sheriff Street, Hartlepool, was wrecked in a fire yesterday. Flames destroyed 40 per cent of the room, another 20 per cent was scorched. The rest of the house was smoke-damaged.
HELPFUL STORE: The Asda store in Billingham has been presented with an award from the Stockton Blind People's Voice Association, after being voted the most blind-friendly place to shop.
ABSEIL CALL: Hartlepool and District Hospice is appealing to daredevils to do a sponsored abseil down the wall of the Marks and Spencer store in Hartlepool. Volunteers are asked to ring (01429) 292127.
SCHOLARLY PRIZE: Yarm School pupils David Anderson and Philip Meikle have won Arkwright scholarships after "demonstrating flair and originality in solving engineering design problems and presenting GCSE work" to a panel of interviewers. They will each receive £250 a year while in the sixth form, to help with buying books and materials.
DESIGN SHOWCASE: Final year students on a BA (Hons) textiles and surface design degree course at the Cleveland College of Art and Design will hold a degree show of their final work at the Hartlepool Art Gallery from June 13 to 23.
SEVERE FIRE: Cleveland Fire Brigade put out a severe fire which took hold of the first floor of an empty house in Thorndike Road, Eston, near Middlesbrough. Crews prevented the blaze, believed to have been started by vandals, from spreading to adjoining terraced houses.
TRAVEL NOSTALGIA: Arthur Holt will open passenger logs recording journeys between 1920 and 1950, at the next meeting of the Teesside branch of the World Ship Society, at Newport Settlement Youth and Community Centre, St Paul's Road, Middlesbrough, on June 19.
