NORTH-EASTERN soldiers killed on June 6 58 years ago were remembered yesterday.
Survivors of the perilous wartime landings on the Normandy beaches, in 1944, remembered their part in the Longest Day at a special ceremony to salute those who fell in action.
Forty members of the Normandy Veterans' Association were among those who attended the unveiling of a sculpted memorial stone and service, at the Garden of Remembrance, in Coatham Road, Redcar, east Cleveland.
Four serving officers with the United States Navy, serving at the Menwith Hills listening station, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, travelled to Redcar for the ceremony.
They were joined by the representatives and standards of about 13 British service organisations.
