MODERN-day North-Easterners yesterday had the chance to sample the tough life of a Roman soldier in ancient Britain.
Hundreds of people visited the annual Roman festival at the Arbeia Roman Fort, in South Shields, South Tyneside.
They saw Roman soldiers practising military manoeuvres, children playing Roman games and found out what breed of livestock would be kept in a typical Roman fort.
Visitors also had the opportunity to visit a reconstructed commanding officer's house and barrack block. A street guard was on hand to talk about life as a Roman soldier.
"It's always a lovely day," said a spokesman for the museum. "There's plenty for the children but we find the adults take just as much from it.
