COUNCILLORS were thanked yesterday for giving a financial grant to a successful racial peace rally.
Darlington Borough Council leader John Williams was invited to visit the Sikh temple, in Louisa Street, so the organisers of the community awareness and educational weekend, on June 2, could thank the council for its support.
About 500 people from different religions from all over the UK travelled to County Durham for the rally, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The event was organised by the Sikh Akal Federation and attracted about 500 people. The federation is a new organisation in the town, set up to combat prejudice through education.
Federation spokesman Parminder Singh said: "We wanted to show Councillor Williams around the temple and also to thank the council for their financial donation towards the running of the educational weekend."
Following Coun Williams' visit, a group of students from Bishop Auckland College also visited the temple to join regular worshippers in prayer and to find out more about the Sikh religion.
