A TOP trainer has been showing that you can teach old dogs new tricks.
Internationally-renowned trainer John Rogerson was teaching nine rescue dogs good manners at the National Canine Defence League (NCDL) rehoming centre at Sadberge, near Darlington.
Lizzie, Wilma, Cleo, Wendy, Charlie, Jacob, Justin, Patsy and Fig were being tested as part of the Kennel Club's Good Citizen Award Scheme.
The dogs, which are all in need of loving homes, were being taught to be polite pets by not pulling on their leads or jumping up, and allowing their owners through gateways and doorways before them.
NCDL Darlington manager Catherine Gillie said she hoped the dogs' improved manners would make finding them a good home more likely.
She said: "These dogs will make smashing family pets for anyone who is looking for a responsive dog which has already learned basic commands and is keen to learn even more.
"But the new owners should be aware that they will have to keep on practicing the commands with the dogs."
The handlers are on a week's training course at the centre, where all nine dogs will be showing off their new skills to the public at an open day next Sunday.
The centre is at Hill House Farm, Sadberge, near Darlington. For more information phone (01325) 333114.
