A DARLINGTON student is preparing to walk the 92-mile West Highland Way and climb Ben Nevis in four days.
Tom Oliver, who is studying at Lancaster University, will complete the challenge with two friends in July to raise funds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
Mr Oliver, 19, a member of the Officer Training Corps at the University, is committed to joining the Royal Marines as an officer when he has finished his degree.
By taking on the challenge, he hopes to improve his fitness and endurance skills, and to raise more than £500 for charity.
The trio will be travelling through some of the UK's most barren land, and walking along Loch Lomond and climbing the highest mountain in the British Isles, the 4,300ft Ben Nevis. They will each carry 85lbs packs and tents. They have been training through extensive hikes in Bowland Forest, near Lancaster.
