The Highways Agency is to spend more than £18m on the motorway and trunk road network in the North-East.
The work will be carried out in the next 12 months as part of the agency's commitment to managing, maintaining and improving the strategic road network.
The larger road schemes due to be carried out this year include resurfacing of the A66 Bowes Bypass and the A1 north of Morpeth.
Over the same period, bridge work will include replacing joints on the Swalwell Viaduct on the A1 and concrete repairs on the road's Wansbeck Viaduct.
More details of individual schemes and of the smaller scale schemes will be made available nearer to their individual start of works dates.
About £8.5m will be invested in Northumberland and Tyneside and £9.9m in County Durham and Teesside.
