AN idea to put up notices detailing the number of motorcyclists fined for speeding in the Yorkshire Dales is to be put to police.

The problem of speeding bikers was discussed by Barton-cum-Walden parish council, in upper Wensleydale. Councillor Geoff Bell wondered if there could be "count boards" indicating the number of people fined for speeding. County councillor John Blackie, who attended the meeting, said he would take the idea up with police, but he said there was little anyone could do to prevent bikers using dales roads. He said that, nationally, the number of larger bikes sold had increased by 30 per cent in a year. Coun Blackie said they were slowing down in villages, but were still travelling over the speed limit on open roads despite two unmarked police cars often being on patrol.

OFFENDERS WARNED: Council chiefs have issued a warning to illegal street traders following a successful prosecution. A persistent offender has appeared before Harrogate Magistrates' Court, where he received a fine and was ordered to pay costs totalling £521. Harrogate Borough Council leader Geoff Webber said: "We hope this will act as a warning to other illegal street traders. We developed a street trading policy in 1999, which is aimed at enhancing the street scene in our town centres, particularly during busy tourist seasons or when special events like the Harrogate Festival are taking place."
