NEARLY a million workers at companies including British Airways and Tesco can expect a better work-life balance thanks to a cash boost announced by the Government.

More than 230 firms and voluntary groups will share funding of £4.8m with the aim of promoting innovative working practices.

Sixteen of the winning firms, employing more than 58,000 people, are based in the North-East.

They include Newcastle City Council and Tyne and Wear Fire Service.

A record number of firms applied for a share of the fund which the Government has set aside for work-life balance initiatives.

Announcing the winners at the Challenge Fund Fair in London, employment minister Alan Johnson said: "Work-life balance is not just about working less, it's also about how, when and where people work.

"This year saw record entry levels for the Challenge Fund and this latest round of funding has enabled us to double the number of companies who will benefit.

"The Challenge Fund is now helping companies of all sizes and sectors across the country achieve the work-life balance goal."

He added: "It is great to see so many companies recognising the benefits of work-life balance and actively seeking help to get smart working practices in place."
