JOGGERS are going the extra mile to raise money for a girl in need of a new wheelchair.

Parents Kerry Deery and Christine Scott will be embarking on a 12-mile run to help Greenland Community Infant School, in South Moor, Stanley, in its bid to raise money for a new wheelchair for six-year-old Rebecca Delap.

Rebecca, a pupil at the school, has grown out of her current wheelchair which she has had since she was three years old.

Kerry said they would be running from South Moor to Sunniside and back again on July 1.

Teacher Gail Wilson said the school and fundraisers have managed to raise £6,000 in the last eight months and just need another £2,000 to hit the target.

She said: "With the new wheelchair Rebecca could go around Stanley and it would last her until she's sixteen."

Rebecca was born without properly developed limbs, but she has impressed the school with her determination to keep up with her peers. She paints using a brush in her mouth and with the slight movement she has in one hand she is learning to write.
