A BID by kinky sex specialists to move into a premier shopping centre has met with public outrage.

But while community leaders are lining up to lash plans to open a Fetish Forum store in Middlesbrough's main shopping street, the local council may find itself powerless to stop the development.

The sex clothing, toy and bondage needs supplier is applying to take over an empty electrical goods shop in Linthorpe Road so, on planning grounds, there would be no change of use.

Sheffield-based Ken and Linda Mitchell, the couple behind the Fetish Forum shops, which were launched eight years ago, are having talks with Cleveland Police next week, before their application for a trading licence goes before councillors.

Linda Mitchell said: "We have got to see the police next Wednesday to see if there are any objections.

"The only thing I can say is the shops we have got are tastefully done. We are guided by the council and the police. They are not seedy shops and there is a demand.''

Ward councillors Barry Coppinger and Javed Ishmail have lodged a formal objection to the application.

In a joint statement they said: "As ward councillors for the area, we object on the grounds that it is inappropriate for Middlesbrough's prime retail street. This is a gateway to the town centre.

"It would send out the wrong message in terms of the image of the town and we are particularly concerned at the annoyance it would cause to many local residents, particularly the elderly and the parents of young children.''

Businessman Mobeen Mehdi, chairman of the nearby mosque, says he will make personal representation to Middlesbrough Mayor and former police officer Ray Mallon.

Mr Mehdi said: "I would condemn this on a personal basis and on behalf of my community.

"I am totally against this and I will go and see the mayor. He has made plenty of promises, now let us see him start to deliver.''

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: "We have received an application for a licence. It will be debated by the licensing committee next month.'
