COUNTY Durham workers put their best feet forward and tested out a new route as part of Leg-It Day yesterday.
Staff from Durham County Council, the Land Registry, Durham Constabulary and the University Hospital of North Durham walked or cycled to work to support the day, organised as part of Green Transport Week. They used an off-road walking and cycling link between County Hall, at Aykley Heads, and Newton Hall, before its final surface was laid and it opened to the public.
The walkers and cyclists were rewarded for their efforts with a barbecue breakfast at the end of their journeys.
A spokesman for the event said: "Leg-It Day was supported by local radio station Century FM, which offered prizes, including holidays and sports equipment to anyone spotted walking or cycling to work."
During the summer, the council's On Yer Bike campaign, which aims to promote the health benefits of cycling, will focus on Chester-le-Street, Derwentside and Sedgefield.
Marshals will lead cycle rides, including two Bridging the Tyne rides to Gateshead's Millennium Bridge on Sunday, June 23. Four Lanchester Show rides are planned for July 6, and an On Yer Bike pedalling picnic will depart from Spennymoor Leisure Centre on July 21.
