Athletics, Guident Heart Spark

The race was sponsored by Guident and St Judes who supply medical equipment to the hospital. They kindly put £1,000 for prizes, medals and pie and peas for all the runners.

The main race, the four-mile trail race, was started by Dr Linker, a heart surgeon from South Cleveland. Fifty-two runners braved the wet conditions.

The race winner was the up-and-coming Matthew Bell from Newton Aycliffe who pulled away from one of the country's leading veterans, Kevin Archer from Cook AC on the first incline at the end of the first lap to win in 21mins 41secs to take the £50 prize voucher, Kevin Archer held off Newton Aycliffe's Peter Milburn to take second place.

There was also outstanding runs from Ken Sanderson of Teesdale AC in fifth position to take the first over-50 prize, and Laurie Cummings from Newton Aycliffe in 16th position to take the first Over-60s prize.

Newton Aycliffe beat Crook AC for the team prize with bell and Milburn supported by the fast improving 15-year-old Adam Gibson in ninth position and Michael Turnbull coming back after injury in 16th place.

The women's race was won by Allison Raw of Darlington Harriers with a tremendous run to finish 14th overall in the race in 23.54 beating one of the area's most promising junior runners Claire Robson from Teesdale AC by over a minute with Kelly Rodmell, another promising junior in third from Kingston-upon-Hull.

There were 70 runners and walkers in the 2K fun-run including Dr Linker and nurses from South Cleveland Hospital.

A special thanks go to the two sponsors of the race, Guident and St Judes, Sue Milburn and Peter Milburn and all Newton Aycliffe AC members. Officials, Liz Lamb, Mrs Bell, Mr and Mrs Brown, family and friends, staff at South Cleveland and all the athletes and clubs that took part in helping raise the £600.
