Resort to get new car park: A BIG new temporary car park is to be created by Scarborough Borough Council on the site of the town's now demolished St Mary's Hospital, in Dean Road.

More than 370 spaces will be created to cope with holidaymakers' cars, said the council's head of engineering services, Keith Allen. The site has been designated by planners for development as a business complex, housing, community or leisure activities. Mr Allen said the car park would help to compensate for the loss of seafront parking caused by the building of the £26m seawall around Scarborough's Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive.

HOSPITAL FETE: The League of Friends of the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, has invited people to join in the fun at their garden fete on Saturday, June 22. The event will begin at 1.30pm in the hospital grounds.

FLOWER FESTIVAL: Fifty years of the Queen's reign in floral designs as portrayed by Northallerton and District Flower Club will be on show in the entrance hall, chapel and courtyards at the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, from June 22 to 24.

FISHY BUSINESS: Ryedale Aquarist Society will meet on Wednesday, June 26, at 7.30pm, at the Bay Horse Hotel, Pickering. The group will be given a talk about the tropical fish of Mozambique. For further details, telephone (01751) 472715.

BALCONY BATTLE: Plans to build a large balcony on a listed harbourside building at Whitby are set to be vetoed by planners. Moralee Brothers, who have taken over the former Burberry clothing factory, in The Shambles, want to build an 18-metre wide first floor balcony, but Scarborough Borough Council planners say it will be an incongruous feature on the imposing building.

SECURITY FOCUS: Traders and organisations are being urged to attend two public meetings over the future of CCTV security cameras in Ryedale. One is to be held at the Milton Rooms, Malton, on Wednesday, and the other at Pickering Memorial Hall, on Wednesday, June 26, both at 7pm. The aim is to discuss the future of the system in the area as a result of police deciding not to monitor the cameras county-wide.

HISTORY SHOW: An exhibition entitled Coxwold Past and Present goes on display in the village hall on Sunday, from 2pm to 5pm, in aid of the local history group. Admission is £1. The displays focus on old photographs, maps and documents of the area.
