FOOTBALL-crazy community wardens are swapping steel toe caps for studs to take part in a mini World Cup tournament.
Youngsters from all over Stockton are getting the chance to emulate their England football heroes thanks to community wardens who are happy to give up their spare time to coach them.
The wardens, who patrol Norton Grange, Hardwick, Mandale, Low Grange, Albany, Portrack, Tilery and Newtown, have teamed up to organise the event.
Children aged from ten to 14 are taking part in the seven-a-side competition from 9am to noon on Saturday, June 22, at Middlesbrough FC's training group at Rockliffe Park, Hurworth, near Darlington.
Local businesses, led by Initial Shorrocks, have supplied medals for the winners, runners up and one for the tournament's top player.
Free transport will be provided by Scott Bros, of Thornaby.
Assistant head of security services for Stockton Borough Council Mick McLone said: "The day is all about the community wardens mixing with the kids, building bridges and gaining their confidence.
"We are also getting a lot of fantastic support from the children, their families and local businesses.
"Never mind that other football competition, let's have some support for the one that really counts."
