Eight years on, the special pride of stabbing victim Emma

Among the proud exhibitors is Emma Winter, who has particular reason to celebrate her creative milestone.

Emma, now 21, was just 12 when crazed knifeman Stephen Wilkinson burst into her maths class at Hall Garth School in the town.

He stabbed Emma's friend, Nikki Conroy, to death, and knifed Emma and classmate Michelle Reeve, before being overpowered by teachers.

Eight years on, Emma is about to graduate from the college and proudly showing off work created as part of her BA (Hons) in textile and surface design.

Although she still bears the scars of that horrific day in 1994, the confident and attractive young woman is determined not to let the ordeal get in the way of success.

"I haven't got over it, but you can't carry it with you every single day," she said. "I'm not going to let him spoil my life."

Emma said Nikki would have done the same, had her life not been so tragically cut short.

"I'm sure if she was here she'd have done extremely well. We've got to make sure that we do well for her."

The girls' attacker was ordered to be detained in a secure hospital after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
