A MARKET town with a pub or bar for every 75 people living within half-a-mile of the centre holds its first ever beer festival this month.
Richmond may have 40 premises with a liquor licence but it is only now that the community has realised its pulling power among those in the know when it comes to real ale.
As many as 20 will be available for tasting in the Market Hall next Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, as part of the Beer and Local Produce Festival which, in itself, forms part of this year's Richmond Festival programme.
Meanwhile, Hawes, in Wensleydale, is also hoping for a positive response to a new initiative of its own later in the year. The town is to host its first-ever Boots and Beer Walking Festival in September, combining the attraction of a ramble in the hills with a decent pint and a pub meal at the end of the day.
Ten routes have been chosen from The Inn Way, penned by author and Northern Echo columnist Mark Reid, with some picked to satisfy both hardened hikers and those who prefer a gentle stroll.
Evening entertainment will also be laid at selected pubs from Friday to Sunday, September 13 to 15.
Places on the routes are limited to 250 to avoid congestion so booking is recommended.
