COUNCIL chiefs are seeking public views on the possible reinstatement of fun fairs to a city centre.

Refurbishment work on Ripon's market square is now coming to a close and Harrogate Borough Council is consulting over whether the new-look area is a suitable site for the traditional fairs.

Deputy council leader Margaret-Ann de Courcey-Bayley said the normal Thursday market was back in full swing and dates for farmers' markets and craft fairs had also been pencilled in.

She said: "The overall aim is to bring about a series of events, both regular and occasional, which would be attractions to both city residents and visitors alike.

"And this does, of course, include the fun fair which has always been an important feature of such things as the St Wilfrid's Day celebrations.

"However, we have been asked to consult with all interested parties to decide whether, in fact, the newly refurbished market place is the right venue for the fun fairs or whether an alternative site should be found."

Community groups or individuals wanting to comment should call the council's chief estates surveyor, Bernard White, on (01423) 556027.
