THE business development strengths of a local authority in the Tees Valley have won it an award.

Stockton Borough Council has won the 2001-2002 Best for Business award from the North-East Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber's local offices nominated several councils.

A "mystery shopper" telephone survey was then carried out, which tested responses and skills relating to business development and support services.

Stockton Council emerged on top, providing the most comprehensive and accurate information, as well as genuine enthusiasm.

Director of development Andy Edwards received the award from North-East Chamber president John Irwin at Ramside Hall.

Mr Irwin said: "There is a large network of business advisory services and funding streams out there which is available to all businesses and the local community.

"It's vital that, when approached by businesses, local authorities are in a position to provide complete information and the best possible advice."

Stockton deserved the accolade for its "glowing report".
